Some view it as a great adventure. Others see it as a trial no one deserves to be subjected to. However, since Western society is heavily dependent on motor vehicles for travel, car dealers are a part of the culture. The secret is, be prepared before venturing into a dealership to purchase a vehicle or to obtain repair car service. Doing research prior to the initial visit can often make a purchase or repair much less painful. There are multiple sources of information accessible to potential dealership clients prior to that first visit.
Perhaps the best source of information comes from drivers of the same make or model of vehicle. Current owners are often aware of any idiosyncrasies the model may have. In addition, they are generally able to inform other prospective buyers of common problems experienced by other owners. Current owners may also be able to report on vehicle performance under circumstances not commonly encountered during a typical test drives from the car dealers.
There are numerous other sources of information available to prospective buyers. Consumer organizations publish detailed reports for most vehicles and, as a rule, these reviews are reliable. Consider, however, that some publications depend on advertising revenue from the very manufacturers they are reviewing. This is an obvious conflict of interest and should be considered when evaluating the vehicles under review. Other publications may pair reviews with information on reliability provided by current owners. The best option is to consider information garnered from multiple sources.
Remember that car dealers earn their income from selling and servicing vehicles. Therefore, it is in their best interest to provide the best service possible to retain their customer base. It is an economic reality that it costs a dealer much more to attract a new client than it does to retain a current one. Therefore, seeking out an established dealer with a strong client base will often result in a quality buying or service experience. Current owners who are happy with their sales and service experience are more likely to recommend those dealers. Use all of the sources available to determine which dealers most likely to deliver quality buying and servicing experiences, and you will be ready to deal.
